About

Does the world not toss you round and round?

Artemis is a 4-man strong rock-band based in Delft/Amsterdam that is moving towards an increasingly progressive sound by which they explore complex musical structures with unpredictable riffs, daring rhythms and a heavy, guitar-driven approach. Inspired by continental philosophers like Søren Kierkegaard, Jean-Paul Sartre and Hannah Arendt, Artemis expresses existential questions with often meteorological metaphors. In May of 2026 their first full-length album Before the Coral Crumbles appeared. Apart from heavy progressive rock with intense vocals, which are a staple on this new album, Artemis also took a chance to experiment with new sounds among which organ and flute.

About Before the Coral Crumbles

Before the Coral Crumbles is the first full length album of Artemis and perfectly captures the width and diversity of Artemis’ sound. Tracks like Cauliflower and In Your Hands make up the meat and potatoes of the album, with heavy riffs, layered guitars, powerful vocals and the occasional odd time signature. Then in the second half of the album, Artemis surprises with different sounds and textures and even some guest appearances. In Cold Julius’ brother Olivier Kortekaas doubles the vocal melody the octave down and Fickle Mistress features Jan van Mulligen on Hammond Organ and Claudia Gonzalez-Diaz on Flute for a twelve-minute, 70-s inspired, 3-part psychedelic epic. The album concludes with an acoustic reflection on the topics discussed throughout the 10 tracks titled Walls/Anything That Goes. The title track “Coral” is the most vulnerable and emotional song of the record and has the greatest dynamic range. The lyrics reflect the overall theme of the album: the choice between vulnerable truth or keeping up appearance.

All the instruments - except for the drums - are recorded at Julius’ studio apartment in Amsterdam and produced by Kaan Yazici in Den Haag. It is the most professional production Artemis has had done so far and the start of a longer collaboration with Yazici.

Meet the Members

Julius Kortekaas

Vocalist / Guitarist

Julius is the creative brain behind Artemis since the first assembly as early as 2018. Growing up on progressive rock and heavy metal, hearing, playing and writing music became a part of his day since early youth. Also, his background in philosophy has greatly inspired all the lyric writing for Artemis

Philip Peterse

Drummer

Philip is a music teacher in-spe, studying in Leiden and has been part of Artemis from the beginning as well as several different collectives. His strong proclivity for odd time signatures has been of immeasurable value to Artemis’ progressive tendencies.

Willem van Overbeeke

Bassist

Willem has been Artemis’ bass player since the beginning. His degree in electrical engineering came in handy with the fabrication of the 3-D printed pieces of decor used during the BCC-Tour.

Koen

GUITarist

Koen joined the band in early 2026, when Artemis needed a second guitar playing to perform Before the Coral Crumbles live in its full glory. With his education from the conservatory and his skilled musical ear Koen has proven a valuable addition to Artemis.
